The word humility has its origin in the Latin word “humilis,” which means “low.” When applied in a Biblical sense, humility means lowliness of mind, meekness, being submissive, and the absence of self. During His earthly ministry, the Lord Jesus Christ told a parable to His disciples about an encounter with a judge “who did not fear God nor regard man,” and a widow who consistently came to him asking, “Get justice for me from my adversary.” This parable is found in Luke 18:1-8.
