Hope

Hope is described as “a feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen.” Hope looks to the future and causes one to be fully optimistic that there will actually be positive outcomes to satisfy expectations. Many years ago God said to the prophet Jeremiah, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil to give you a future and a hope” (Jeremiah 29:11). Note carefully “to give you a future and a hope.” It was true then and it is certainly true today. Hope must involve God. […]

America the Beautiful

So goes the title of the well known and loved American patriotic song. Interestingly, the second stanza ends, “America, America! God mend thine every flaw, Confirm thy soul in self-control, Thy liberty in law! “Confirm thy soul in self-control” is exactly what’s not happening in America today.  The lack of self-control can have disastrous consequences. This is evidenced in both houses of the US Congress right down to the States,Cities, inner cities, and man in the street.  There is so much feud between Republicans and Democrats, not to mention infightings within each political party. Also, from time to time, the […]

Do Not Fear!

At some point in our lives, we need help, especially when it comes to anxiety, stress, fear, and despair. During these times we may be tempted to throw up our hands and either “give in” or “give up.” God’s Word, the Bible, provides a workable formula for these times and situations. It is presented by the prophet Isaiah where God Himself strongly declares this formula. “Fear not, for I am with you. Be not dismayed for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes. I will help you. Yes. I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (Isaiah […]

Humility

The word humility has its origin in the Latin word “humilis,” which means “low.” When applied in a Biblical sense, humility means lowliness of mind, meekness, being submissive, and the absence of self. There are various examples of humility in the scriptures, but the finest example of humility is our Lord Jesus Christ. No one and nothing can adequately describe His matchless and unparalleled humility. He was fully submissive to God’s will. As He was facing death on the cross, He prayed to His Father, “… not what I will, but what you will” (Mark 14:36). This was an act […]

A Persistent Widow

During His earthly ministry, the Lord Jesus Christ told a parable to His disciples about an encounter with a judge “who did not fear God nor regard man,” and a widow who consistently came to him asking, “Get justice for me from my adversary.” This parable is found in Luke 18:1-8. And, it teaches a lot about the christian and prayer. Hence, Jesus is instructing us to “pray and not lose heart.” Some christians are discouraged to “persevere in prayer” when the answers don’t seem to be coming as they expect. The lesson in Luke 18:1-8 is that we keep […]

A Great High Priest

One of the many great things about our relationship with God is that “we have a Great High Priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus, the Son of God” (Hebrews 4:14). Yes, indeed, our Great High Priest is none other than the Lord Jesus Christ, God’s only begotten Son who is far superior to all earthly priests. Even Aaron who, on the Day of Atonement, entered the Holy of Holies once a year and sprinkled blood to atone, first for his own sins, and those of the people. It is most noteworthy that we are exhorted to “Consider the Apostle […]

Behold the Lamb!

It is most interesting that in the very first chapter of the fourth Gospel, the writer calls attention to the Lord Jesus Christ as the “Lamb of God.” The Bible  says, “The next day John saw Jesus coming towards him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29). What joy, admiration, and great wonderment must have filled John’s heart as he sees “God’s Lamb” face to face. John also declared, “This is He of whom I said, “After me comes a Man who ranks before me, because He is before me” […]

My Sheep

“During His earthly ministry, Jesus was up against the Jews who tried to oppose and contradict Him. The Bible tells us, “And Jesus went into the temple, in Solomon’s porch. Then the Jews surrounded Him and said to Him, “How long do You keep us in doubt?  If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.” Jesus answered them, I told you and you do not believe. The works that I do in My Father’s name, they bear witness of Me. “But you do not believe because you are not of My sheep, as I said to you” (John 10:24-26). Jesus […]

Thanksgiving

One of the most beautiful words in the English language is “thanksgiving.” It involves gratitude and appreciation. It is a most wonderful thing to be thankful. People are thankful for a variety of reasons. One of these reasons should be for life itself. The very fact that we are alive, breathing, and enjoying a measure of health and strength should definitely be appreciated.  The United States designates the fourth Thursday in November as “Thanksgiving Day,” and is a public holiday. Everyone can celebrate this day however they choose. As christians, many of us utilize the season to render thanks to […]

The Gospel

What is the “gospel?” The gospel is “good news” that God has provided a way for sinful man to right with Himself. It all began with Adam, God’s first created human being, and placed in a sinless environment with specific instructions on what he could and could not do. Adam disobeyed God and as a result, sin came into the world. The Bible points out that ”just as sin came into the world by one man and death through sin, so death spread to all men because all sinned” (Romans 5:12). This means that Adam’s sinful virus has inflicted every […]
