“Bethlehem and Christmas”

Both Bethlehem and Christmas are significant as we observe and celebrate the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ who was born in the little city of Bethlehem.  The Scripture tells us this about the birth of Jesus Christ: “She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21). “She” is referring to Mary, the mother of Jesus.  The prophet Isaiah predicted that Christ would come: “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called […]

How is your thinking?

The world in which we live is most ungodly, corrupt, dishonest, immoral,;to say the least. Today  right is wrong and wrong is right. And truth is scarce. How then should Christians think in this environment? The Bible says, “For as [man] thinks in his heart, so is he” (Proverbs 23:7 KJV). Admittedly, at times we struggle to live a godly life in obedience to God’s established principles and standards. Not surprising, King David prayed, “Create in me a  clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10). He also prayed, “Prove me, O LORD, and try me. Test my heart and my mind” […]

“Things that are seen versus things that are not seen”

The Bible says there is a difference between the things that are seen and the things that are not seen. Here is the text: “So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal” (2 Corinthians 4:16-18). The Bible is telling […]

“Give Glory Only To God!”

“Glory be to God the Father, Glory be to God the Son, Glory be to God the Spirit. God Almighty, Three in One. (Horatius Bonar, 1808-1889). This beautiful hymn has been sung for many years.  When we say “Glory to God” or “Glory be unto God,” we are expressing that God is deserving of our honor, praise, and thanksgiving. There is also this well known doxology. “Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and forever shall be, world without end. Amen.” The Oxford Dictionaries define the word glory as “high renown […]

The Choices We Make

Life sets before us many choices and we must make choices every day. One of the problems we encounter is that we do not always make the right choice. Here are some rather simple choices we make every day, and at times without even thinking about it. Here are some examples. We can choose to eat or not to eat; to run or walk; to sleep or remain awake; to sit or stand; to talk or remain silent. It’s important to keep in mind choices do have consequences. History shows that people have lived to regret making the wrong choice […]

“My Lord And Me”

The well known and ever popular 23rd Psalm begins, “The Lord is my Shepherd.” This is a Psalm of King David, “the man after God’s own heart” (Acts 13:22). In this short Psalm of only six verses, David is expressing what the Lord means to him in a personal way. “The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want” (verse 1). From then on, David uses the personal pronouns “He and you” referring to the Lord; and “I and me” referring to himself. In conclusion, David expresses his complete confidence in the Lord by saying, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the […]

“God With Us”

The Prophet Isaiah wrote concerning the birth of Jesus Christ: “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear son, and shall call his name Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14). And in Matthew 1:23 the Bible says: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall his name Immanuel (which means God with us)”  “Veiled in flesh the Godhead see; Hail the incarnate Deity, Pleased as man with man to dwell Jesus, our Emmanuel.” —Charles Wesley (1707-1788) There is much more to Christmas than the focus being only on the “baby” Jesus without considering the […]

Why Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving can be a beautiful word in a person’s vocabulary. The dictionary defines thanksgiving as ‘the expression of gratitude, especially to God.’ How nice to hear these words of gratitude; “Thank you” or “I appreciate it,” when  a gift is given to someone or a favor is done for someone.   In the United States, “Thanksgiving Day” is an annual national holiday celebrated by family members and others as they gather together to eat and enjoy a special Thanksgiving meal, which traditionally consists of turkey, with the stuffing, mashed potatoes, rolls, cranberries, and various types of pies for dessert.  In 1941 President […]

Can God Forget?

Is it possible for God to forget? Not according to the Scriptures. We live in a day and age when there is a demand to remember various things, especially passwords which security requires us to access personal information, and the like. Just about everyone forgets something from time to time. It may be the names of people, places or things. It could be as simple as where we misplaced our keys. And even  names of people we were recently introduced to. A youngster once said the three things he finds it hard to remember are names, faces and he can’t remember […]

Lordship of Jesus Christ

One of the foundational truths of the Christian faith is the Lordship of Jesus Christ. The apostle Paul declared, “Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2:9-11). Jesus Christ as Lord we gladly own, now seated on His Father’s throne. Paul also makes it clear that because of the atoning death of Christ on the […]
