Is there more than one way to God? There are some who feel that there is. Let’s see what the Lord Jesus Christ has to say. He said. “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). This is Jesus making this statement of Himself. Note carefully, the personal pronouns “I” and “me.” Also, “no one comes to the Father except through me.” This is absolutely important to be aware of since Jesus was the only sinless being that ever lived. And as Dr. Charles Stanley points out, “The truth is very narrow—the only way someone can come to the Father is through Jesus, who lived a completely sinless life, in thought, word, and deed” (Life Principles Bible, p. 1278). Dr. Stanley is absolutely right. No human is capable of living a “completely sinless life.”
Jesus Christ is the only way to God and the only way to heaven. In comforting His apostles and assuring them that He would be coming for them, Jesus told them, “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. “And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.” (John 14:1-3). Of course, Jesus was referring to heaven when He said my Father’s house. ‘Heaven is a prepared place for a prepared people.’ Prepared people are those who have repented of their sins and trusted Jesus Christ as their Savior.
The only sure way to heaven is through the Lord Jesus. And by accepting Him as your Savior, you are on your way to heaven. In talking to people about Jesus as the only way to heaven, one gets the feedback that some believe there are several ways. For example, “live a good and sincere life—don’t smoke or drink use drugs.” Another thinking is “go to church on Sunday and keep the commandments, and observe the golden rule.” While these examples are good and proper within themselves, they are not the way either to God or to heaven.
Jesus also said He is “the truth” and “the life.” Truth is hard to come by these days. Just about at every level of society, there is the compelling need for truth. Many scandals are the result of people not being honest and speaking the truth. Some have actually paid a high price because they were not truthful. Some elected officials have been disgraced because they failed to tell the truth even under oath. Jesus is the ‘embodiment’ of truth. This means that He is the “perfect example of truth.”
When Jesus stood before Pontius Pilate the governor, Pilate said to him “So you are a king?” Jesus answered. “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.” Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” (John 18:37,38). The answer is as we saw is in Jesus’ declaration of himself. Because Jesus is “the truth,” He is able to declare His authority before the governor and everyone else. Pilate had to admit, “I find no fault in him” (John 18:38).
Jesus is “the life,” meaningHe is “eternal life” and the actual source of it. And anyone who accepts Jesus as Savior, has eternal life. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). Jesus tells us that He came that we may have life and have it abundantly. He also said “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep” (John 10:11).
The Lord Jesus desires that we be preoccupied with eternal life, which should be our ultimate objective. The present physical life is only for a time. That is why He told His apostles, “I go to prepare a place for you . . . I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also” (John 14:2,3). The believer in Jesus Christ is a “heavenly citizen” who is only passing through this earthly scene. The best is yet to come and the prospects are bright and wonderful.
Since the Lord Jesus Christ is the only way to God and to heaven, why not trust Him as your personal Savior and be assured of being a “heavenly citizen.” You can accept Jesus right now. May God grant it for His glory.
