“The Second Advent of Jesus Christ”

One of the greatest events in human history, yet to take place, is the return or “second advent” of the Lord Jesus Christ — the hope and expectation of past and present “born again” believers. Dr. Charles Stanley wrote: “The certain return of Christ should fill believers with unquenchable hope and help them to find strength when they come under attack for their faith” (Life Principles Bible, pg. 1445).  It is very important that Christians understand the various aspects of our Lord’s return, especially in these “last days.” We see the signs of the times all around. Preaching the doctrines […]

“In the Beginning, God“

“In the beginning, God” . . . and what follows are unique, authoritative, and profound words and their exclusive meanings. Here is the context.   ”In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void; and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day and the darkness He called Night. And there […]

“Self-control”

In our work-a-day, topsy-turvy, “modern-day” world, the tendency by some is to “blow up” by getting excessively angry without taking a moment to consider that our words and actions can have devastating consequences. Unsuppressed anger influences the way we think and act. Words and actions can cause a lifetime of pain, grief, and sorrow. The Bible teaches, “Whoever is slow to anger is better than the mighty and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city” (Proverbs 16:32).  The key is being “slow to anger,” which means to stop, think, and exercise wisdom before making a decision. This occurs […]

The Majesty of God

The majesty of God is one of many great attributes of God’s essential being.  There aught to be a heartfelt recognition of this in Christian living. How else can our Sovereign God be preeminent and get the honor and glory He is worthy of?  Majesty is defined as “sovereign power, authority or dignity.” (Merriam-Webster dictionary.  People, in general, have various concepts of God. The Bible tells us everything about God that we need to know about Him.  Someone rightly expressed that “Christian worship rises or falls on our concept of God.”   Christians worship God with love, reverence, adoration, honor, and respect.  When we think […]

“The 23rd Psalm”

Perhaps Psalm 23, written by King David, is the most beloved, widely known, and familiar chapter in all the holy Scriptures.  It is also widely circulated, read, quoted, recited, referred to, used at funerals, put to music, and used to comfort those in need. This Psalm uses the metaphor of the Shepherd and his sheep.  The 23rd Psalm is very personal. Observe the use of the personal pronouns, “The LORD is my Shepherd,” “I shall not want,” “He makes me to lie down,” “He restores my soul,” “He leads me in the paths of righteousness.” Many people have recognized its beauty and fallen in love with it.  Psalm 23 […]

“The joy of being restored!”

The verb restore means to reinstate someone to their former position or condition. And so it is with Christians who have “strayed” from the “Christian pathway,” and returned to their former lifestyle, that is, the way they lived prior to coming the Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.  Such believers  “ran well” with a love, passion, joy, and enthusiasm for the Lord, but somehow decided to abandon their faith in God and be entangled in the affairs of this godless world. At one time, the Galatians had made a commendable start in the Christian life. However, something had eroded their love and enthusiasm […]

Complete and Wonderful Salvation

Each and every Christian who trusted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, has a complete and wonderful salvation because Jesus Christ’s atoning work on the cross is done. Absolutely nothing needs to be added and nothing needs to be taking away. The Bible says:“There no longer remains a sacrifice for sins” (Hebrews 10:26). Also “For the death He died He died to sin, once for all, but the life He lives He lives to God” (Romans 6:10). When Christ died on the cross, He secured eternal salvation for us. The Bible says “When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, ”It is finished,” and […]

WHY BE A CHRISTIAN . . . .

A true Christian is a person who has trusted  Jesus Christ as his or her own personal Lord and Savior, because of what He did on the cross. Jesus paid the penalty for the sins of mankind through His shed blood and death. This was the way God chose to reconcile sinful man to Himself. The Bible declares, “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned —every one—to his own way; and the LORD has laid on [Jesus] the iniquity of us all” (Isaiah 53:6). From the quoted text, we can clearly see that without exception, humanity, like lost sheep, have […]

“Thus says the LORD!”

Having been in church leadership for over three decades, I am most concerned about the type of sermons some church pastors are presenting to their congregations. Is “Thus says the LORD?” too old-fashioned or out-dated to be relevant today?  Nowadays, the Biblical text seems to be changed to read, “Thus says the man.” Without a doubt, some churches would rather put the  emphasis on wealth, worldly happiness, and “feel-good-about-yourself” sermons.  The things and practices of the world are brought into the church and adopted as essential parts of the sermons. Remember the old commercial, “if it’s out there, it’s in here?” ’Out […]

“The Apostles’ Creed”

“I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of […]
