THE BIBLE — A GOD BOOK

The Bible, also called Holy Bible, God’s Word or the Scriptures, is the greatest book ever written. This amazing Holy Book is the Book of books and it is timeless, trustworthy, and inspirational. The Bible is the infallible, inerrant, and inspired Word of God, and He is its divine author.

It is believed that the Bible was completed about 2,000 years ago, and is estimated to have sold between 4 to 5 billion copies.

A total of sixty-six books in two main divisions called Old Testament (OT) and New Testament (NT), make up the Bible. The OT has 39 books, and the NT has 27 books. From the beginning to the end—Genesis through The Revelation—the Bible has one great theme, which is the Person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ, God’s only Son.

The all-wise God appointed forty-four human authors to write the Bible. The first five books, from Genesis to Deuteronomy, called the Pentateuch, were written by Moses. King David wrote many of the Psalms. Many of the books are named after their authors.

The Bible begins with God. The first verse of the first chapter of the book in all Scripture reads: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1).

Though some think the Bible is irrelevant, and even tried to destroy it, yet it remains relevant and considered to be the most influential book of all time. It is as accurate today as it has ever been. Though some feel the Bible contradicts itself, the fact is it contradicts them. Scripture is corroborated by Scripture.

God’s Word is inspired by God Himself and not man. The Bible says “For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit” (2 Peter 1:21).

This shows that the Scriptures are “God-breathed” 2 Timothy 3:16,17 says, “All Scripture is breathed out by God and  profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete equipped for every good work.”

The Bible is alive and powerful like no other book. The writer to the Hebrews says “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12). No other book is capable of doing this.

The Word of God stands firm because it is settled in God’s heaven. “Forever, O LORD, your word is firmly fixed in the heavens” (Psalm 119:89). This means that absolutely nothing on earth is capable of changing or altering God’s Holy Book. All that the Bible says is fully approved by God and will remain for all eternity.

Psalm 119, the longest Psalm and chapter in all Scripture, presents a panoramic view of God’s Word. It is divided into twenty-two sections corresponding to the twenty-two letters of the Hebrew alphabet. There are eight verses in each section for a total of 176 verses. This Psalm describes God’s Word as: Law, Testimonies, Precepts, Statutes, Commandments, and Ordinances.

Psalm 119 begins with the joy of obeying God’s Word.  And in the final verse of the Bible’s longest chapter we read: “I do not forget your commandments” (verse 176).

The Bible reveals the greatness of God and man’s insignificance. It says “all flesh is grass, and all its beauty is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades when the breath of the LORD blows on it; surely the people are grass. The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever” (Isaiah 40:6-8).

Though all around is sinking and shaking,
My Bible will always be standing firm!
This is my true and permanent foundation —
A priceless gift from God to all mankind.

God declares this about His Word: “Is not my word like fire, declares the LORD, and like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?” (Jeremiah 23:29). The divine writer of the Scriptures symbolizes His Word as both “fire” and ”hammer.”

The two symbols of fire and hammer show the tremendous power of God’s Word in working effectively upon the hearts and minds of mankind. Fire to melt and softens the stoney heart of man. The hammer will “shape” the melted heart to respond to His will and His way.

The Bible will keep us from sin or sin will keep us from the Bible. Rest assured, God cannot deny His Word.
