Christ’s Atoning Work Is Done

he Bible tells us: “There no longer remains a sacrifice for sins” (Hebrews 10:26). When Christ died on the Cross, He secured an eternal redemption for us by paying the penalty for our sins once and for all.

Atonement means “reconciliation.” And sinful man is reconciled to God through the redemptive work of Jesus Christ on the Cross. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ has reconciled us to himself” (2 Corinthians 5:17,18).

The Bible says: “When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished,” and He bowed His head and gave up His spirit” (John 19:30).

“It is finished” means complete, full and complete — absolutely nothing can be added and nothing can be taken away. The believer’s salvation is complete, because Christ “appeared once for all . . . to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself (Hebrews 9:26).

And since we are not redeemed “with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot” (1 Peter 1:18,19).  Therefore, believers’ redemption is eternal since “Christ entered once for all into the holy place, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of His own blood, thus securing eternal redemption for us” (Hebrews 9:12).

When we pause to think and meditate on what Christ has done for us, we’re bound to conclude we have a great Savior and a wonderful Lord. The writer to the Hebrews says it well: “There no longer remains a sacrifice for sins” (Hebrews 10:26). Also, consider this, “So Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for Him” (Hebrews 9:28).

The atoning work of Christ our Savior is done
We now have a High Priest at God’s right hand
Ever living to make intercessions for His people
Until that day of great triumph and great wonder
When He comes to take us to our heavenly home.

In contrast to the animal sacrifices that were offered on Jewish altars year after year “as the high priest enters the holy places every year with blood not his own, for then he would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world” (Hebrews 9:25,26).

The second clause of the text tells us what Christ did in comparison. “But as it is, [Christ] has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself” (Hebrews 9:26).

It is important  to note the following: “But in these sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins” (Hebrews 10:3,4).

Now look at the difference Christ’s coming makes with His intent to carry out God’s will in paying the penalty for our sins with His own once-for-all sacrifice on the Cross. “Consequently, when Christ came into the world, he said, “Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body have you prepared for me; in burnt offerings and sin offerings you have taken no pleasure. Then I said, “Behold, I have come to do your will, O God, as it is written of me in the scroll of the book” (Hebrews 10:5,7). “As it is written of me in the school of the book” refers to exactly what King David wrote in Psalm 40:6-8).

We see then that it was God’s will and purpose to “replace” the sacrifices and practices under the Old Covenant with the one sacrifice of Christ in the New Covenant. And those sacrifices of old pointed to Christ and were fulfilled in Him. “Therefore He is the mediator of a new covenant” (Hebrews 9:15).

As a result of Christ’s atoning work on the Cross for us, believers “are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power” (Colossians 2:10 KJV). Saved, sealed and sanctified. Therefore, truly born-again believers in Christ cannot lose his or her salvation, as some believe.

Here’s the proof. The Bible says: “In [Christ] you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory” (Ephesians 1:13,14).

Note carefully: “when you heard the word of truth the gospel of your salvation, and believed in Christ, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit.” The Holy Sprit is the seal. The seal means  ownership and security.

The presence of the Holy Spirit in the believer is a sign that that individual belongs to God. The Bible says: “Your body is a temple of the Holy spirit within you, whom you have from God. You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s” (1 Corinthians 6:19,20). Some translations omit the very last clause.

Based on the clear teaching of Scripture, how then can a saved person lose his salvation. Perhaps that person was never saved at all. You can’t lose what you don’t have!!!
