The Majesty of God

The majesty of God is one of many great attributes of God’s essential being.  There aught to be a heartfelt recognition of this in Christian living. How else can our Sovereign God be preeminent and get the honor and glory He is worthy of?  Majesty is defined as “sovereign power, authority or dignity.” (Merriam-Webster dictionary.

People, in general, have various concepts of God. The Bible tells us everything about God that we need to know about Him.  Someone rightly expressed that “Christian worship rises or falls on our concept of God.”

Christians worship God with love, reverence, adoration, honor, and respect.  When we think of situations in our world today, one wonders whether the right concept of God exists in the minds and hearts of people.

The God of the Bible is self-existent and infinitely majestic.  Here are a few Biblical references in support of this fact. “Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and glory and the victory and the majesty” (1 Chronicles 29:11). “They lift up their voices, they sing for joy over the majesty of the LORD” (Isaiah 24:14). “Out of the north comes golden splendor; God is clothed with awesome majesty” (Job 37:22). “The LORD reigns; He is robed in majesty” (Psalm 93:1). “Splendor and majesty are before Him; strength and beauty are in His sanctuary” (Psalm 96:6). “On the glorious splendor of your majesty and on your wondrous works, I will meditate” (Psalm 145:5). “After making purification for sins, [Jesus] sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high” (Hebrews 1:3).  In the quoted texts, ”Majesty” refers directly to God.

There are some who refer to God as “the man upstairs” as if the Eternal God resides in an earthy house.  Anyone referring to God as such lacks spiritual discernment and is completely ignorant of who the God of the Bible really is.  The Bible clearly states that God is not man. God specifically declares of Himself as “I am God and not a man” (Hosea 11:9).  Also, “God is not a man that He should lie, or a son of man that He should change His mind” (Numbers 23:19).

Anyone having this erroneous concept of God is trying to bring the Majestic God, who supremely reigns in heaven, down to a humanistic level.  God also states, “Remember the former things of old; for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none beside Me” (Isaiah 46:9).  The Bible also tells us, “Yet the Most High does not dwell in houses made by hands. Heaven is my throne, and the earth is  my footstool”  (Acts 7:48-49). God’s majesty is also revealed in the fact that He is “the High and Lofty One who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place” (Isaiah 57:15).

Earthly kings and queens are given the title of ‘His or Her Majesty’.  However, when it comes to the Sovereign God, and God of the Scriptures, majesty takes on an entirely different meaning altogether, because God is exalted above this immoral and corrupt world. And neither is He subject to, or accountable to anything or anyone.

God who reigns in majesty and power also knows the minds and hearts of humanity. The Bible says, “For the LORD searches all hearts and understands every plan and thought” (1 Chronicles 28:9).

In his magnificent prayer of worship and thanksgiving at the dedication of Solomon’s temple, King David eulogized God saying, “Blessed are you, O LORD, the God of Israel our Father for ever and ever; Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O LORD, and you are exalted as head above all” (1 Chronicles 29:10-11).

These profound words can never be ascribed to any human being even with man-given earthly titles that include majesty.  Here, David acknowledges the greatness and the majesty of his awesome God. Such an expression of adoration, praise, and thanksgiving to God is divinely inspiring for Christians to worship God enthusiastically.
