The Self-Existent God

Christians are under constant attack for their faith in Almighty God. God Himself is also under attack by the very people He created.  There are those who doubt God’s existence and the fact that He created the universe.  The Bible says, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1).

The Bible also says this about the Lord Jesus Christ: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him and without Him was anything made that was made” (John 1:1, 3).

Others believe that the Bible—the Holy Scriptures—is a “myth” because it was “written by man and it contradicts itself.” Yes, human authors, chosen by God, wrote the Scriptures, but they were under “divine inspiration of God” who supernaturally directed the writing. That’s why the Bible says,  “All scripture is given by inspiration of God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16,17).” If God Himself actually wrote the holy Scriptures, it would not be more accurate.

This brings us to the “self-existence of God.” God is essentially self-existent in that He exists “in and of Himself,” and completely independent of anything else. Self-existence is one of God’s great attributes. He was never created, nor did He “come into being” as some think. And He is not subject to anything or anyone He created. He “is not served by human hands, as though He needed anything since He himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything” (Acts 17:25). God is uniquely self-existent.

The same God who believers worship and serve also supremely reigns in majesty and power. This Most High God, is the “possessor of heaven and earth,” (Genesis 14:19) and He “has established His throne in the heavens, and his kingdom rules over all” (Psalm 103:19).

King David recognized God’s authority when he said, “Yours, O LORD, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaves and in the earth is yours; yours is the kingdom, O LORD, and you are exalted as head above all. You rule over all. In your hand are power and might, and in your hand it is to make great and to give strength to all” (1 Chronicles 29:11,12).

Although God is not visible to the human eye, yet He is “omnipresent,” meaning He is in all places, at all times, and He rules in the affairs of the universe. King Solomon wrote, “The eyes of the LORD are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good” (Proverbs 15:3). God emphatically states “Am I a God at hand, declares the LORD, and not a God far away? Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him? Declares the LORD. Do not I fill heaven and earth? declares the LORD” (Jeremiah 23:23,24).

God is also self-sufficient and completely independent. No one can stop Him because of His unlimited power and might. Job in his response to God said, “I know you can do all things; no purpose of yours can be thwarted” (Job 42:2).

God revealed to the prophet Isaiah, “I am God, and there is none like me. My purpose will stand and I will do all that I please.” (Isaiah 46:9,10).  Isaiah also wrote, “Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom” (Isaiah 40:28).

Daniel writes about the rise and fall of earthly kingdoms, stating that God “does as He pleases with the powers of heaven and the peoples of the earth. No one can hold back His hand or say to Him: “What have you done?” (Daniel 4:35). Here again we see the self-existence and self-sufficiency of our Sovereign God, who is sovereign in His governance of the nations of this world.  David acknowledged, “The kinship belongs to the LORD, and He rules over the nations” (Psalm 22:28).

God reigns over the nations; God sits on his holy throne. (Psalm 47:7-8). There is more than ample evidence around us about the self-existence of God.

Let us not for a single moment try to underestimate or attempt to challenge the self-existence of God; “who is, who was, and who is to come, the Almighty” (Revelation 1:8). His awesome power is displayed throughout the universe that He created.

May we be filled with wonder, faith, hope, reverence, and confidence in Almighty God who has no rival and no equal. To Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
