The majesty of God is one of many great attributes of God’s essential being. There aught to be a heartfelt recognition of this in Christian living. How else can our Sovereign God be preeminent and get the honor and glory that He is completely worthy of?
Majesty is defined as “sovereign power, authority or dignity.” (Merriam-Webster dictionary). People, in general, have various concepts of God. The Bible tells us everything God wants us to know about Him. Someone rightly expressed that “christian worship rises or falls on our concept of God.” Worship is love, reverence, adoration, honor, and respect for God. When we think of events in our world today, one wonders whether the right concept of God exists in the minds and hearts of people.
The God of the Bible is self-existent and infinitely majestic. Here are a few Biblical references in support of this fact. “Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and glory and the victory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, O LORD, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all” (1 Chronicles 29:11 NIV).
“They lift up their voices they sing for joy over the majesty of the LORD” (Isaiah 24:14). “Out of the north comes golden splendor; God is clothed with awesome majesty” (Job 37:22). “The LORD reigns; He is robed in majesty” (Psalm 93:1). “Splendor and majesty are before Him; strength and beauty are in His sanctuary” (Psalm 96:6).
“On the glorious splendor of your majesty and on your wondrous works, I will meditate” (Psalm 145:5). “After making purification for sins, [Jesus] sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high” (Hebrews 1:3). Here, “the Majesty on high” refers to God.
There are those who callously refer to God as “the man upstairs” as if the eternal and immortal God resides in an earthy man-built dwelling house. Anyone referring to God in such a manner lacks spiritual discernment and is completely ignorant of who the God of the Bible really is. The Bible clearly states that God is not man. God specifically declares of Himself as “I am God and not a man” (Hosea 11:9). Also, “God is not a man that He should lie” (Numbers 23:19).
Anyone having the erroneous concept of God is trying to bring the Majestic God, who supremely reigns in heaven, down to a humanistic level. God also states, “Remember the former things, those of long ago; I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me” (Isaiah 46:9 NIV).
God’s majesty is also revealed in the fact that He is “the High and Lofty One who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place” (Isaiah 57:15).
Earthly kings and queens are given the title of ‘His or Her Majesty’. However, with reference to the Sovereign God of the Scriptures, majesty takes on a different meaning altogether, because God is exalted above this sin-defiled world and neither subject to, nor is He accountable to anything or anyone. God who reigns in majesty and power knows the minds and hearts of mankind. “For the LORD searches all hearts and understands every plan and thought” (1 Chronicles 28:9).
In his magnificent prayer of worship and thanksgiving to God at the dedication of Solomon’s temple, King David eulogized God in saying, “Blessed are you, O LORD, the God of Israel our Father forever; Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O LORD, and you are exalted as head above all” (1 Chronicles 29:10-11).
Such sacred words cannot be ascribed to, or bestowed upon any human being even if that person is given earthly titles that include majesty.
David in his prayer, acknowledges the majesty of the Christian’s awesome God, which is so divinely inspiring for us as believers in the Lord Jesus Christ to hold God in very high regard, and think and speak of Him with respect and reverence.
