Sovereignty means unlimited power and authority. Whereas the Bible presents much about the Sovereignty of God, yet there is no attempt in the scriptures to prove God’s existence. The very first words in all scripture begins, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). Since the Sovereign God is the divine author of the Bible, it means that “All scripture is breathed out by God and is profitable for teaching, reproof, correction and instruction in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16).
One of the Hebrew names or titles for God is “El Elyon,” which means “God Most High.” The patriarch Abram (his name was later changed to Abraham) expressed God’s sovereignty this way, ”I have lifted up my hand to the LORD God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth” (Genesis 14:22). Possessor means creator. As Sovereign, God is omnipotent, meaning He is all-powerful, He is omniscient, meaning He knows everything, He is omnipresent, meaning He is everywhere at the same time. God’s all-seeing eye and inescapable presence prompted King David to declare, “Where shall I go from your Spirit? or, where shall I flee from your presence? It I ascend to heaven, you are there. If i make my bed in Sheol, you are there” (Psalm 146:16).
Moses prayed, “LORD, you have been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever, you had formed the earth and the world, From everlasting to everlasting you are God (Psalm 90:1-2). Here Moses acknowledges the eternality of the Sovereign God, which means that God is timeless, having neither beginning nor end. Also, King David said of God, “Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom and your dominion endures throughout all generations” (Psalm 145:13).
God has also made it very clear that He is “God alone” and there is none else. He says of Himself, “before Me there was God formed, nor shall there be any after Me. I am the LORD and beside Me there is no Savior” (Isaiah 43:10-11). Moses asked God what he should say to the children of Israel if they asked who sent him to them. God responded, “I AM WHO I AM.” Say to the people of Israel, I AM has sent me to you” (Exodus 3:13-14). God shows His “self-existence” that no one can contain Him.
Because God is Sovereign, absolutely nothing is beyond His awareness or control. Everything is subject to Him and “He works all things according to the counsel of His will” (Ephesians 1:11). Paul wrote, “Oh the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and unfathomable his ways” (Romans 11:33).
The Bible declares, “The LORD has prepared His throne in the heavens and His Kingdom rules over all” (Psalm 103:19). In his sermon to the Athenians, Paul said, “The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, nor is He served by human hands” (Acts 17:24).
