Throughout the Holy Scriptures, we can clearly identify God’s greatness in many instances. Let us keep in mind that God is sovereign and He possesses ultimate power. In The Revelation to John, God declared, “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty” (Rev. 1:8).God identifies Himself as the Alpha and the Omega, which is the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. This means that God is the “beginning and the end.” Everything originates in Him, and everything ends in Him. God knows the past, the present and the future of all things. No mortal man can truthfully make such a bold claim.
Many of us as Christians can definitely attest to God’s incomparable ways in our personal lives and in the lives of others that we are aware of. Our awesome God is omniscient, that is, He knows everything. He is omnipotent, that is, He has unlimited power; able to do anything. And He is omnipresent, meaning He is present everywhere and at the same time.
We see God’s uniqueness in the creation of mankind and also the universe. The prophet Isaiah wrote, “Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, who formed you from the womb: “I am the LORD, who made all things, who alone stretched out the heavens, who spread out the earth by myself” (Isaiah 44:24). Let us not overlook certain noteworthy things in God’s statement. God uses the personal pronoun “I”—“I am the LORD, who made all things.” And He continues, “who alone stretched out the heavens, who spread out the earth by myself.” This surely leaves absolutely no room for man to intervene or be involved and take credit for anything in God’s creation. God not only created the heavens and the earth, but He also formed man from the womb and placed man on the earth. King David wrote “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims His handiwork” (Psalm 19:1). The heavens are proclaiming God’s majesty and glory, and the sky is displaying God’s handiwork. And through this, God is making Himself known to us each and every day. May we never take these things for granted.
The heavens are telling the glory of God
The wonder of His work displays the firmament,
In all the lands resounds the word.
Never perceived, ever understood,
ever, ever, ever understood.
(Composer: Franz Joseph Haydn, 1732-1809)
The apostle Paul concludes the eleventh chapter of his letter to the Roman Christians by writing about God’s matchless wisdom. “Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and how inscrutable His ways! “For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been His counselor?” “Or who has given a gift to Him that he might be repaid?” For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be glory forever. Amen” (Romans 11:33-36). Its worth repeating for emphasis. “For from him and through Him and to Him are all things.” Isn’t our awesome God absolutely worthy of our homage, worship, thanksgiving, praises, and adoration?
We also see our incomparable God’s display of His divine power when He had miraculously performed one of the greatest acts in human history to deliver the people of Israel from Pharaoh and his host. The Scripture says, “Then Moses and the people of Israel sang this song to the LORD, saying, “I will sing to the LORD, for He has triumphed gloriously, the horse and his rider He has thrown into the sea. The LORD is my strength and my song, and He has become my salvation; this is my God, and I will praise Him, my father’s God and I will exalt Him.” . . . “Who is like you, O LORD among the gods? Who’s is like you, majestic in holiness, awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders? (Exodus 15:1,2,11). Moses and the people of Israel recognized that only God could perform such a mighty deed to deliver them by completely destroying Pharaoh and his host. No one but no one can be compared to our Almighty God who is “majestic in holiness, awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders.”
God’s Word consistently reveals that there is only one true and living God. Isaiah states, “Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel and His Redeemer, the LORD of hosts: “I am the first and I am the last; besides me there is no god. And then God seems to be sending a clear message for anyone who might attempt to challenge His authority, “Who is like me? Let him proclaim it. Let him declare and set it before me, since I appointed an ancient people. Let them declare what is to come, and what will happen. “Fear not, nor be afraid; have I not told you from of old and declared it? And you are my witnesses! Is there a God besides me? There is no Rock; I know not any” (Isaiah 44:6-8). “Rock”is in reference to God. “The LORD is my Rock” (Psalm 18:2).God reiterates there is no god beside Himself. Paul writes, “For although there may be so-called gods in heaven or on earth—as indeed there are many “gods” and many “lords”—yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist” (1 Cor. 8:5,6).
God is emphatically declaring that He is the one and only true God. Let us rejoice and be glad that the only true God is the believer’s God who ever lives and rules in the affairs of mankind.
