“The Sovereign God!”

Sovereignty means unlimited power and authority.  Whereas the Bible presents much about the Sovereignty of God, yet there is no attempt in the Holy Scriptures to prove God’s existence. The first words in all Scripture reads, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1).

God is  the divine author of the Bible, where it is stated that “All scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16,17).

One of the Hebrew names or titles for God is “El Elyon,” which means “God Most High.” The patriarch Abram (his name was later changed to Abraham) expressed God’s sovereignty this way, “I have lifted up my hand to the LORD, God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth” (Genesis 14:22).  Possessor here means Creator.

As Sovereign, God is omnipotent, meaning, He is all-powerful, He is omniscient, meaning, he knows everything, He is omnipresent, meaning, He is everywhere at the same time.  God’s all-seeing eye and inescapable presence prompted King David to declare, “Where shall I go from your Spirit? or,  where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol you are there” (Psalm 139:7,8).

In his prayer to God, Moses said: “LORD, you have been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever, you had formed the earth and the world. From everlasting to everlasting you are God” (Psalm 90:1-2). Moses is acknowledging the eternality of the Sovereign God. And this means that God is timeless — having neither beginning nor end.  Also, David said this about God, “Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom and your dominion endures throughout all generations” (Psalm 145:13).

God has also made it very clear that He is “God alone” and there is none else.  He describes Himself in this way, “Before Me no God was formed, nor shall there be any after Me. I, I am the LORD, and beside Me there is no Savior” (Isaiah 43:10-11).

Here is a very interesting question  by Moses to God, and how God responded. The Bible says: “Then Moses said to God, “If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, “The God of your fathers has sent me to you, and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?” God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Say this to the people of Israel, ‘I AM has sent Me to you.’” (Exodus 3:13-14).

Because God is Sovereign, absolutely nothing is beyond His awareness or control. Everything is subject to Him and “He works all things according to the counsel of His will” (Ephesians 1:11).

Paul wrote, “Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable his ways” (Romans 11:33).

David declares, “The LORD has established His throne in the heavens and His Kingdom rules over all” (Psalm 103:19).

In his sermon to the Athenians, Paul said, “The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does no live in temples made by man, nor is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything” (Acts 17:24,25).

No mortal man, irrespective of his earthly accomplishments could ever speak with such power and authority. And that is why God Almighty continues to rule in the lives and affairs of all mankind.
