Why should I believe God?

God is most trustworthy. God has made it known to the world: “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts” (Isaiah 55:8,9).

Think of the unfathomable distance between heaven and earth. And yet God uses this  distance between His thoughts and ways in comparison to our thoughts and ways. His thoughts and ways are that much higher than ours. This is worth pondering.

And God goes on to declare: “So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it” (Isaiah 55:11).

Let’s keep in mind; only God can truthfully speak with such authority because He is God and not man; neither is He accountable to man. This is substantiated in the Scripture where God says of Himself: “Before me no god was formed, nor shall there be any after me. I, I am the LORD, and besides me there is no savior” (Isaiah 43:10,11). Note, the ‘g’ in “no god” is not capitalized.

One of the greatest things a person can do, above and beyond anything else, is to have faith in God. And believe in the God of the Scriptures. God cannot fail; He has pledged His word. He says to the Christian: “I will never leave you nor forsake you. So we can confidently say, The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me? ” (Hebrews 13:5,6).

Some of us may have personally experienced the failure of people to keep their word, or heard of others who had a similar experience. It is quite possible that those who engage in such practices could have their reputation tarnished.

Our endeavor should always be to do as we say, and also keep promises we make. Otherwise, it could lead to a decline of trust in us by the person to whom the promise was made to.

Words have tremendous power. The Lord Jesus said: “But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words will be condemned” (Matthew 12:36,37 NIV).

The Bible cautions us to be careful with what we say: “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen” (Ephesians 4:29 NIV).

What a tremendous difference this would make in our society if we were to talk what is helpful for building others up according to their needs.

The topic of this blog asks the question; “Why should I believe God?” The straightforward answer is God can definitely be trusted. Unlike man, what God says He means, and He means what He says. He keeps His word forever.

Here is the biblical response to the question: “God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, will he not do it? Or has he spoken , and will he not fulfill it?” (Numbers 23:19).

God is absolutely perfect, and he cannot and will never change or deny His word. Therefore, “it is impossible for God to lie” (Hebrews 6:18).

There is absolutely no possibility of God ever changing His mind. The Scripture sets forth two unchangeable things that Christians can completely rely on, which are (1) God’s word, and (2) God’s oath, which guarantees it. (Hebrews 6:18,19 refers).

The Holy Bible (or the Scriptures) is God’s divine means of communicating with mankind. And it begins with God, and the story of God’s creation of the world. It says:  “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1).

The Bible assumes the existence of God, rather than attempt to prove it. The Bible addresses those who deny God and His word: “The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds, there is none who does good” (Psalm 14:1 and Psalm 53:1).

The Lord Jesus said in His prayer to God: “Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth” (John 17:17). Since God’s word is truth, we can accept it, believe it, and apply it without any doubt whatsoever. That’s why we should believe God.
